Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 17, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll discover how, like in that great song "Money For Nothing by Dire Straits, Vonage is getting "their MTV." If you've ever wondered what Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron really thinks about Skype, you'll learn that, too. We'll also point you to a new interesting Vonage Forum thread - one in which a Forum member is trying to figure out if he can block certain incoming numbers from dialing his Vonage number. Finally, we'll comb through an older, but recently updated thread with some questions and advice on Vonage's SoftPhone service.

In The Headlines

Vonage All Over MTV's "Real World"

Have to admit, I watch MTV a good bit less than I did, say back in the 1980s. But I just might have to tune in more, once the 16th season of MTVs "Real World" kicks off this coming Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern/9 p.m. Central. A quick definition for those of you even more out of touch with the world of MTV than I am these days: The Real World features exploits of a group of twenty-something housemates recruited by MTV, who not only share a common dwelling, but share all their hang-ups and more than a few of their urges.

And if they want to call the outside world, the newest Real World cast will use a Vonage Videophone to do so. Based in Austin, Texas, this season's host house will also feature Vonage as the home page on the house PC, Vonage mouse pads next to the PC, and "Vonage's "People do Stupid Things" advertisement as the house PC's screen saver.

Vonage's Citron: Skype "Is Not Impacting" Us

Many people who talk about Voip tend to lump Vonage and Skype together. Since various surveys indicate that these two companies are the two-largest IP Telephony services measured by number of subscribers, the urge to compare Vonage and Skype is an unavoidable one.

That's a comparison that Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron rejects, however. Citron says as much in "Skype Rules North American VoIP, an article posted yesterday on the telephony Web site Light Reading.

"Skype says it themselves, they are not a replacement for your home telephone- they are an ancillary communications service," Citron tells Light Reading's Mark Sullivan. "What Skype does is allow you to make a cheap telephone cal using your PC - so as an ancillary communications provider, who are they impacting? They are certainly not impacting Vonage."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Today, we'll introduce you to a new thread, as well as an older conversation with a newly added, quite interesting post.

In a new thread entitled Block a Number?, Vonage Forum Member Patrik asks fellow Forum Members if there is any way to block incoming numbers from reaching his Vonage phone number. Member jasperaxle suggests a third-party utility called Intelescreener that he says "works quite well," but whose only drawback is that it works with only one home phone. Reading the rest of his post, jasperaxle describes the workaround he implemented to have the block work on all of his extensions. When last we checked, Forum Member KDWycha posted another potential workaround suggestion.

(Note: we are not endorsing InTeleScreener: only relaying the experiences of our Members who have used the product. You can join that thread by following the link to the thread name in the preceding paragraph).

Sometimes, we find it interesting that a thread that starts under one name and with one subject gets a life of its own. Guess you'd have to say that Softphone upgrade to regular service is one of those threads. The conversation started back in February of this year with a post by Forum Member welcher- who wondered if it possible to transfer a Vonage softphone number to a standard ATA-based Vonage setup. In the same thread, though, welcher asked for USB headset recommendations- presumably for Vonage SoftPhone. Over the last four months, several Forum Members have posted comments on workarounds that they believe could make a standard phone work with the Vonage SoftPhone interface. Last week, Forum member scerruti suggested adding a second SoftPhone number instead. But last night, Vonage Forum Member otaku chose to address the other part of welcher's thread-kickoff question. "Logitech makes a decent USB headset. Works pretty well for me!," he said.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us on Monday for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
