Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 16, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll tell you why Vonage just may be sending you a sticker that you will be required to place on your phone. You'll learn how your Vonage subscription is helping people find work in one New Jersey community. We will bring you a peak inside a famous free online encyclopedia used by that defines and profiles just exactly what Vonage is. We'll also point you to two new interesting Vonage Forum threads - one in which a Forum member can't seem to get the voice mail message lights working on his phone when he receives a Vonage voice mail, and the other that describes one Vonage's subscriber's problems calling cell phone numbers in one of North America's largest cities.

In The Headlines

Vonage May Be Sending You A Sticker To Place On Your Phone

We've already pointed to articles that have described Vonage CEO's Jeffrey Citron's skepticism that all Voip providers will be able to guarantee absolute E911 access to all subscribers by the time the Federal Communications Commission's headline takes effect in September.

If Vonage, for some reason, falls a few subscribers or a few days late, well, then, expect Vonage to send you a sticker to place on your phone. As ZDNet IP Telephony blogger Russell Shaw reports, (BTW: one of the few Voip sites that I always find time to read, and you should also) this sticker isn't a marketing gimmick, but one required by the FCC in a recent memorandum telling Voip access providers such as Vonage exactly what they need to do to follow these E911 rules.

Here's the FCC talking:

"Interconnected Voip service providers shall distribute to all subscribers, both new and existing, warning stickers or other appropriate labels warning subscribers if E911 service may be limited or not available and instructing the subscriber to place them on and/or near the CPE (Consumer Premises Equipment) used in conjunction with the interconnected Voip service."

For These Folks, Vonage Is More Than A Phone Company: It's A Paycheck

Yesterday's Asbury Park (N.J.) Press reports that Vonage, which is based in Edison, N.J., will add some 600 jobs to its 1,400 worker payroll this year. Currently, some 200 positions are being filled each month, many of which are associated with Vonage's move this fall from Edison to Holmdel, N.J. While Holmdel is around 23 miles away from Edison, it has cheaper land, which means it will be easier for Vonage to build a bigger facility that will house these new employees. In fact, a Vonage recruiter was spotted at a local job fair on Tuesday.

Just in case you're interested, here's a link to Vonage's Careers website.

Vonage Defined In Online Encyclopedia

The free online encyclopedia Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org) has more than 575,000 articles. Adults and students with inquiring minds use this service often to find articles about subjects they want to know more about.

One of these Wikipedia articles defines Vonage. The definition is pretty basic stuff, describing what Vonage is, the services they provide, and how number portability works for Vonage subscribers. If you read Wikipedia's Vonage article, you'll even see a link back to the Vonage Voip Forum!

And speaking of:

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a week-old, frequently posted thread entitled Anyone having trouble with the Voice Message lights, Vonage Forum Member SBMongoos complains that from time to time, the Voice Message lights on all of his three phones do not go off after he has finished picking up a Vonage Voice Message. Suggestions are pouring in. Forum Members KDWycha and AspectTec advise pressing the asterisk (*) symbol on the phone after the message is retrieved. But another Forum Member, randym431, says that to solve a similar problem, he changed phone brands. Do you have your own suggestions? We're sure SBMongoos - and most other Forum members, would love to read your post with your advice.

Home to 1.2 million people, Dallas, Tex. is the economic heart of the Dallas-Ft. Worth metropolitan area, as well as one of the ten largest cities in the United States. When you have a place with all that activity, you get a lot of cell phone usage. But in a new thread called Problems with calling cell phones at 214 area code, (the AC for most of Dallas), Forum Member Aubrey says that when calling Area Code 214 cellphone numbers from his Area Code 972 (another metro Dallas area code) on his Vonage line, the ring becomes static-y and the connection is poor.

Aubrey is looking for Forum Members with similar experiences and solutions. If you've got either or both, follow the link in the preceding paragraph and offer your advice!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
