Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - June 14, 2005

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 14, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll have some additional details about that big Vonage-Linksys router giveaway promotion, including corrected information about how it works, and even an article analyzing why Vonage is doing this. We'll also point you new Vonage Forum threads in which Forum members are looking for tips on how to diagnose and correct a possibly bad router and slow Internet connection speeds that seem to have started when they hooked up their Vonage service.

In The Headlines

More Details on Vonage/Linksys Free Router Offer

In yesterday's Digest, we revealed the start of a six-week promotion in which several retailers are letting you trade in any router for a Linksys WRT54GP2 wireless-G Broadband router configured for Vonage service.

We noted that to make things happen, you'll go to a Best Buy, Circuit City or Comp USA and plunk down $129.99 for the router. At checkout, you will be issued a printed rebate form. Then, once you get home, you've got two tasks:

Go online and sign up for Vonage, and then find your old router and send it in to Linksys.

The first reports we noted on the Internet made it appear that once you sent in your form, you'd get a check for $129.99. Well, the rebate procedure is a bit more complicated than that.

The rebates actually go like this. You'll receive a $10 rebate from Linksys, a $20 rebate from the participating retailer, and two separate $50 rebates from Vonage. Those latter two rebates are yours assuming you've stuck with your service plan for 90 days. Total=$130.00.

Want to make your money back even faster? You can always just sign up online here and receive a free router and your second month of Vonage service free also, no waiting for the rebate.

So Why Is Vonage Being So Generous?

In three words, "do the math."

A new article on the RedHerring.com Web site explains why Vonage is participating in this program. The piece notes that Vonage has said it spends roughly $150 to $200 in marketing costs for each new subscriber it signs up. So writing new customers who sign up for the service two checks totaling $100 "appears," the publication says, "to be a relatively small price.

Does Vonage Offer Enough Services to Compete With the Big Guys?

The new Business Week magazine has an article entitled "Vonage Is Spending Cash As Fast As It Can In Marketing VoIP." While the article apparently was written before the big Linksys router promotion, it does note that Vonage spent $21.8 million last month on Internet advertising, and is actively seeking partnerships with Wi-Fi hot spot providers to allow Vonage subscribers to make Voip calls as they roam. But article author Roger Crockett notes that Vonage has yet to acquire the partnerships or build the technology that would allow Voip calls to be switched back and forth from Wi-Fi to cellular, or even to a television set. Crockett wonders whether these lack of options will make it difficult in the future for Vonage to compete with more diversified providers such as SBC and Comcast.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new thread entitled Bad Router, Vonage Forum Member rwells1938 details his suspicions that his Linksys RT31P2 router supplied with his Vonage service has gone bad. He lists the steps he has taken to diagnose the problem, but those initial steps did not fix the issue. To the apparent rescue comes Member paul248, who speculates the problem could be that DHCP isn't enabled on rwells' PC. In a post he put up at 8:27 p.m. last night, paul248 details how to fix things by enabling an automatic IP address.

In another new thread Speed Issues over time? new Vonage Forum Member greight01 says that when he hooks up his phone adapter, his speed is OK - but only for awhile. When we checked early this morning, the thread was buzzing with suggestions from several Members on how to diagnose the problem, as well as additional questions from greight01 on some of these ideas. Vonage user helping others- a big part of what the Vonage Voip Forum is about!

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
