Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 10, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Today, we'll tell you about a county official in suburban New York who has taken it upon himself to warn his constituents about deficiencies in Vonage's E911 service. We'll also how to tell you how to watch a streaming video in which two pillars of the Digerati take Vonage out for a spin. We'll also point you to new Vonage Forum threads about the best combination of router/ATA and phone, and introduce you to the experiences of one Forum member as he navigates the sometimes choppy waters of phone number portability.

In The Headlines

Citing Vonage, NY County Official Cautions Constituents to "Beware of" Internet E911

In his periodic letter to constituents, Nassau County (N.Y.) Deputy Presiding Officer Roger Corbin alerts consumers that some Internet phone services may not include enhanced 911 access.

Corbin singles out Vonage's failure in Houston to speedily route a 911 call to emergency dispatchers as an example of VoIP's E911 vulnerabilities. "People have a reasonable expectation that when they dial 911 from their phone they will be connected to an emergency operator and they will be located," Corbin says. "But unfortunately, that is not always the case."

Corbin acknowledges the Federal Communications Commission's ruling mandating Voip E911, but says that despite the ruling, this would be an opportune time to inform Nassau County residents of the conditions as they currently are.

The specific difficulties of Voip E911 in the suburban New York City county of 1.4 million residents is further detailed by Inspector Edmund Horace of the Nassau County Police Department's Communications Bureau. Insp. Horace is quoted in Corbin's note as saying that VoIP-originated emergency calls are often direct to an administrative line that may not be answered speedily.

"Digital Duo" Tests Vonage in Video Clip

Stephen Manes and Angela Gunn are two technology journalists with more than 35 years of collective experience. You may know Manes from his writing in Forbes magazine and his appearances on PBS. Gunn is technology editor of USAToday.com.

They've teamed up to do the ongoing "Digital Duo" feature for PC World magazine's website. Manes and Gunn have a two minute, 10-second clip entitled The Duo Give Vonage's Voip Service a Spin." "What you get for your money is a pretty good deal," Manes says. Gunn goes over a list of features that speak of Vonage's configurability and portability options.

You'll need Flash 6 to watch this clip, but most newer Web browsers already have Flash installed. You can find this clip at http://www.pcworld.com/digitalduo/video/0,segid,23,00.asp

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new post entitled My number to be ported today but line disconnected?, Vonage Forum Member entropy1980 outlines his frustration at the multi-week red-tape involved in porting his former SBC local phone number to Vonage. I got back to entropy advising him that this snail's pace was not normal and to speed the process, he should contact Vonage, not SBC. He apparently did so, but was told that the transition from his existing Vonage number to the ported number might take between 12-48 hours - during which time he might not be able to receive incoming calls on his SBC line.

In another new post called Best Combination of Router/ATA Phone, Forum Member Datone wants to know what combination of reiterate (Analog Terminal Adapter) and phone would work best with his Vonage service over his RoadRunner high speed cable connection. Member paul248 advises Datone to stick with the Linksys RT31P2, which is the hardware you get if you order directly from Vonage. Paul adds some helpful tips on how to make the installation go smoothly.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
