Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 7, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Each weekday morning, we'll be here to bring you a taste of the latest Vonage news; technology, corporate, new third-party products, vendor alliances and statements by Vonage executives. We'll also include highlights of the day's interesting threads and posts from the Vonage Voip Forums.

In The Headlines

Vonage and Uniden To Develop Cordless Broadband Phone System

Remember those late-night TV commercials that featured "Uniden" products? "Uniden="you need an..," get it?

The biggest news story of the day concerns the fact that Vonage and Uniden America are going to develop a broadband phone system configured with Vonage service. The system will be called the Uniden UIP1869V, and will consist of a telephone base unit that will plug directly into your broadband router. This means that users will not have any need for a standalone adapter and telephone.

The UIP1869V will support up to ten cordless handsets, and be based on Texas Instruments' TNETV1060 Voip gateway chipset.

No word on the price for this system, or specific release date, but both companies say the Uniden UIP 1869V will be available "soon."

We think that "soon" means July. How do we know? Because Uniden is also working with a Vonage competitor on a phone system that sounds very much like the UIP1969V.

Sorry, Vonage - Uniden Is Not Dating You Exclusively

It's always a bitter pill to swallow when someone you are making big plans with drops that line on you.

For Vonage, the equivalent is likely to be news that Uniden is preparing a virtually identical flavor of its UIP 1869V. Uniden and Vonage competitor Packet-8 are working on a UIP 1869P that will also have support for ten cordless handsets. These units will run on the 5.8 GHz spectrum and will offer a feature set that includes call waiting, caller ID, handset speakerphone, call transfer between handsets, two-way radio capability and four-way conferencing.

This product is expected to hit store shelves starting in July, with additional retail partners due to come on board over the following two months.

That's why we think you can expect Vonage-Uniden in about two months from now.

Vonage CTO: Remember To Register Your Whereabouts

An article in the new issue of Network World features an admonition from Vonage CTO Louis Mamakos.

Noting that Vonage does not currently have "any direct trunks" to E-911 operators, the article cites (but does not directly quote) Mamakos strongly urging Vonage users to register your phone's whereabouts and be sure to update this information if you move. Otherwise, he is noted as saying, emergency personnel you contact via Vonage will have no way of knowing the call should be dispatched to the emergency services dispatch center in your new locality.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Two new threads capture our attention today.

In Linksys Router RT31P2, No phone lights or internet connectivity, Forum member Trowski says that his router just dropped a call he was on, and what's worse, the router's phone lights are now out and he's lost both a dial tone and Internet connectivity. One other member in this ongoing discussion suggests a firmware upgrade.

On the Switching phone number to different router thread, Forum member cactus has three Vonage phone numbers, and has been thinking about moving two of his Linksys phone adapters around the house. He wonders if it's possible to trade his Vonage number associated with one adapter and swap it out for another number. In this ongoing thread, some other Vonage Voip Forum members volunteer their advice that this should not be a problem.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us tomorrow for the next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest!!
