Vonage Driver Andretti Has Powerful Sponsors

Vonage In Print News

What's in a name? For Marco Andretti, plenty

May 27, 2005

By Jay Hart

INDIANAPOLIS | As Marco Andretti's crew wheeled his orange No. 26 car down pit road at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a track official commented, ''He's got some pretty powerful sponsors.''

Count Vonage, Motorola and Hershey's among them, all banking on an 18-year-old with exactly one semi-big-time race under his belt. That they've chosen him only magnifies the obvious — there are high expectations for the next Andretti and, fair or not, there are going to be skeptics.

''Absolutely,'' Marco Andretti said when asked if he feels the pressure of carrying on the family name. ''There's a lot of added pressure, but you're not going to go fast if you think about it. I just gotta focus on what I need to do and do it.''

Today, he'll become the third generation Andretti to race at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway when he starts 10th in the Futaba 100, his first-ever oval race. The event is part of the Menards Infiniti Pro Series, which is the IRL's equivalent of Triple-A baseball.

In his one previous Pro Series start, Andretti started from the pole at St. Petersburg, led 22 of 40 laps and took first place, becoming the series' youngest-ever winner and prompting his father, Michael, to consider speeding up Marco's already accelerated track to the big leagues.

Might Marco race in the 2006 Indianapolis 500?

''If I think he's ready, yeah,'' Michael Andretti said.

The father, who knows about the pressure of living up to the family name, acknowledged that ''all eyes are on'' Marco and that he has a lot to live up to. Conversely, Marco knows about the past, about how his grandfather, Mario, won the 500 only once, and about how his father came close so many times only to finish second — in 1991, when Rick Mears passed him with 12 laps to go — or third, or fourth, or fifth, but never first.

Now the question is will the Andretti curse at Indy continue with Marco?

''I think it's definitely on their minds,'' Marco said. ''They never bring it up because of that reason. They don't want to think about it. A lot of bad luck. [Twelve] laps to go and three or four times he [Michael] could have won this thing. Who knows? ''

Looking at Marco — the whisker-less face, the shaggy blond hair — it's hard to imagine giving him the keys to a vehicle that goes 190 mph He has yet to graduate from high school (he's completed his coursework and taken his final exams at Notre Dame High School in Bethlehem Township) and wasn't even allowed in the pits until last year, because he was too young.

But when he opens his mouth, the words aren't those of a typical high school senior. He talks about patience, repeats advice his father has given him and acknowledges how lucky he is to be doing what he's doing.

''When you're winning, you're expected to win,'' he said, explaining what it's like to have a famous last name. ''So, it's like, 'He should be.' Then when you're not, it's like, 'Why isn't he?'

''It's a tough deal — that side of it. But I think on the other hand, it opens a lot of doors, and I'm fortunate for that.''

So he knows that part of the reason he is where he is, is his last name?
