Vonage Takes Part In Oscar Hand Out

Vonage In Print News

Oscar Isn't The Only Gold Handed Out

February 21, 2005

By Karen Thomas

Celebrity "gifting" — handing out freebies at awards shows and other events in hopes that the products will be photographed or mentioned in the media — is a booming business.

And now businesses that donate to celebrity gift bags are trying to ensure that their products end up in the hands of A-list celebs, not in the closets of fourth-tier Hollywood hangers-on.

Gift bags are so hot that many companies are creating advertising divisions to focus solely on celebrity placements, says Karen Wood, president of Backstage Creations, which specializes in creating celebrity gift bags.

Wood says her clients are becoming a lot more discerning. They "want insurance that we are passing it hand-to-hand to a celebrity, and it's not going to a publicist's office where it will sit with 15 or 20 other baskets."

The "official" Oscar basket — the most prestigious and pricey (more than $100,000 last year) — is now joined by dozens of unofficial gift baskets, which are not going to "the high caliber of talent" associated with the Oscars, says Samantha Milo Haft, president of On3 Productions, another celebrity gift bag specialty company. "Some may not even reach the talent."

To maintain the prestige, no one associated with the Oscar basket will speak on the record about it. Companies can start preparing bids for the Oscar basket at least six months in advance.

To get an idea of how competitive the gift bag business has become: On3, which prepared the gift basket for Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards, considered 125 bids before choosing 25 items.

Among strategies that gift basket organizers are taking on behalf of companies that have products:

  • Using backstage checklists, in which a celebrity must sign for the gift bag.
  • Making the bags totable. All the items in the Screen Actors Guild gift basket, for example, were crammed into a suitcase with wheels. "We make it as easy as possible for stars to transport it," Haft says.
  • Placing company officials backstage to hand out the baskets.

Gift bags have become so de rigueur that stars of every caliber expect fabulous freebies to be handed out like candy at every Hollywood event.

At last month's Sundance Film Festival, once a sleepy little venue for independent film, "there seemed to be a bigger focus on the swag than the films," Wood says. "It was sad."

Bonus in the basket

Cashmere PJs, mink eyelashes and weekend getaways are among the goodies coming the way of host Chris Rock and the performers and presenters at Sunday's Academy Awards. The official gift basket is a "thank you" to the unpaid talent.

USA TODAY unwraps some of the loot:

  • A Krups kitchen set. Not just a coffeemaker, either. This year's gift includes a toaster, an electric kettle and a year's supply of coffee and tea ($700)
  • A two-night stay at The Carlyle hotel in New York ($2,300)
  • A red leather case filled with Shu Uemura cosmetics, including mink eyelashes ($600)
  • A year's supply of Vonage broadband phone service ($500)
  • A three-night stay for two at Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina ($3,600)
  • A two-night stay for two at Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley (Calif.) wine country ($2,500)
  • A three-night stay for two (plus a "personal surf-butler") at St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa in Dana Point, Calif. ($5,900)
  • A dinner party at any Morton's, The Steakhouse ($1,500)
  • Kay Unger cashmere pajama bottoms ($500)
  • An assortment of Manni Oils' extra virgin olive oil ($540)
  • An unlimited day of services at Cornelia Day Resort, which just opened this month on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue ($3,500)
  • A three-night stay at San Ysidro Ranch, a popular celebrity honeymoon spot in Montecito, Calif. ($3,000)
