Vonage: Linksys RT31P2 Voip Router

January 13, 2005

By Ronny Ko

2004 was labeled the year for Voice-over-IP (VoIP). The technology has come a long way and it is now a reality that you can cheaply make telephone calls over the internet. The Linksys RT31P2 lets you use your existing handsets.

Based on Linksys existing and tested router technology, this router comes with two extra phone ports that allow you to continue to leverage your traditional telephone handsets. The two phone ports work independently of each other which allows you to make two separate telephone calls at the same time.

The router comes with three switch which allows you to connect two computers and share network resources. Nowadays, hubs have become an extinct species because switches are faster and more efficient at shuttling network packages throughout the network. This means that finding and accessing shared folder are expedited.

Setup

Setting up the RT31P2 was a breeze. As long as you're a subscriber of Vonage's Voip service, Vonage will provide you with a router.

Just as simple as setting up any other non Voip router, this router is setup the same way. Because you'll be sharing a network connection, you'll have to clone the external IP first. Some users will have to register this router's WAN MAC address with your High Speed internet service provider. Check with your provider first.

Out of the box, you'll find the router, the power adapter, a CD with manuals and an Ethernet cable.

Taking your Telephone with you

Because this is an internet phone router, you can simply take the router with you wherever you may go. You won't be charged any long distance charges unless you make telephone calls which are outside of your North American (Canada and USA) telephone plan.

At this point, you have two options. You can take your router with you or you can take the software with you. The good news is that Vonage offers a software it calls Vonage Softphone. The bad news is that this is an optional feature. Yes, you have to pay in order to use the Softphone.

Updating the Firmware

Like most other routers, the Linksys RT31P2 firmware can be upgraded easily by visiting the support pages at Linksys.com. The upgrade process was simple and straight forward.

The Vonage Service

In order to make use of the router's full Voip services, you need to have access to an internet telephone provider like Vonage. One of the best things we liked about the service is the fact that you can throttle your bandwidth use in order to best use of the available Internet broadband bandwidth. This can be set by logging into the Vonage customer service website.

From the customer self-service site, you can not only see who many calls you have made but you can also see how long and where the calls were made to.

You can order or cancel options too. Vonage Voip service offers options for CallerID, Voicemail, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, 3-way Calling, Call Transfer, Call Return, CallerID Block, and much more. We were impressed at how identical the features were with traditional phones.

Voice Quality

In our tests, we didn't change our default settings. In general, voice quality was acceptable and good. The reasons were that quality of the calls was not dependent on the quality of the internet Vonage network, but on the quality of the Internet connection throughout. Once the voice packets leave Vonage, the quality may be lower and lost. We had several long distance calls in which calls were dropped and quality was extremely poor. Nonetheless, 95% of the calls were good and connection quality was good.

Some receivers commented that the callers' voice sounded deeper and almost didn't allow the receiver to recognize the caller.

For a list of complete voice plans, please visit Vonage.com

Conclusion

After an initial 15 minute setup of the hardware and about 15 minutes to setup and understand the self-service website, we were able to make calls.

Voice quality is still lacking over traditional publicly switched networks but Voip has come a long way and it is certain that the lowered costs may be worth the investment. The lowest plan comes with 500 minutes which includes long distance calls anywhere in North America. While you can make local calls, we don't recommend it if you're log at least one to two hours per day. You'll be going over the plan in no time. Vonage offers another plan which can essentially replace your phone and even transfer your telephone number to Vonage.

The QOS feature on this router does not work well.
I had to disable it to get better voice quality.
