Video Phones To Ring Up Sales
The Sci-Fi Phone Seems Ready To Finally Land On Solid Ground

December 28, 2004

By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (December 28) -- Shares of WorldGate, the Pennsylvania-based company which makes video phones, jumped nearly 25 percent on Monday on extremely heavy volume. The increase was another sign that Wall Street -- and possibly Main Street -- is finally ready to accept what was once regarded as a science-fiction fantasy.

The video phone, which enables telephone callers to actually see each other, was first introduced at the New York World's Fair in 1964. Many futurists and pundits said that the two-way video device would be in the majority of American homes within a decade or so. In 1970, Ma Bell spent nearly a billion dollars on a marketing campaign for its "Picture Phone."

But the phone company soon discovered that consumer demand for the video phone was weaker than a cup of Maxwell House and that the technology required to deliver video signals to the phone was on par with the Apollo project. The video phone became a relic before it ever became a reality. Ma Bell put it on the shelf along with five-digit phone numbers.

However, WorldGate and other video phone companies, such as Vonage and Viseon, are trying again and this time they might get it right. And here's why:

Improved Technology

The video phone of yesteryear was correctly compared to a space project because the images appeared as if they were being beamed from Venus. However, using new chips and technologies, such as voice over IP, today's video phone can produce a relatively clear and static-free picture in real time. The movements on screen do not have that jerky feeling that you see in some streaming video. This is an important breakthrough because many consumers (and business people) will not even consider using the device unless the picture is reliable and close to TV-like.

Improves Business Communication

As we approach the year 2005, today's top executives are constantly searching for new ways to improve company communications. Many organizations have divisions spread across the globe and the video phone could be an inexpensive way for employees to establish closer working relationships. Nothing beats being able to actually see your colleague when you talk to him.

The Evolution of the Phone

Today's phone, whether it's a landline at home or a mobile device, has evolved over the years. In addition to old-fashioned conversation, consumers now use the phone for recording messages, playing games, calculating expenses, taking still pictures and storing addresses and phone numbers. The concept that a phone could also serve as a video device no longer seems so farfetched.

However, unlike services that hope to deliver TV networks to the cell phone, the video phone makes more sense because it can enhance a task you are already going to perform on the device; it can improve the quality of the call. However, watching TV programs on your cell phone requires you to stop what you're doing and take on an entirely different task. Consequently, cell phone TV services are facing an uphill fight.

Home Phone?

So, I predict that the video phone will do very well in the business community in 2005. You'll see more video phones sitting on conference tables and executive desks when you visit companies next year. However, it will still be several years before consumers feel comfortable with having a video phone at home. It's not that the technology isn't ready; the consumer isn't.

The idea that someone could see you at home with your curlers up or your bathrobe on will not sit well with most people.
