Long Distance, Big Savings With Internet Phone Service

Vonage In Print News

By Jeffery D. Zbar

Long-distance charges were getting to Scott Rosenthal.

From his home office in Wellington, the sales executive would easily spend $150 a month calling his Portsmouth, N.H.-based employer, as well as clients nationwide.

Then in 2002, Rosenthal learned about a way to save the company money, voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP. He switched from a traditional long-distance carrier to a broadband phone company.

"The savings were significant," said Rosenthal, director of sales and marketing with property management company Ocean Hospitalities. The service cut his bill from $150 to around $45 a month -- a flat fee that allowed unlimited domestic long-distance calls. "I didn't change how much or who I called. I just changed what I paid."

Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, is a simple way to transmit telephone signals over the Internet. The service converts phone calls into digital data that is sent over the Internet, and re-assembled into audio signals at the recipient's end. A similar technology, IP (Internet protocol) phones, is a broader application for larger companies that can replace traditional wired phone systems.

"IP telephones are starting to make an awful lot of sense for many businesses," said Thomas Ewing, vice president and general manager with Compuquip Technologies Inc., a Miami computer and Internet telephone installation and consulting firm.

Both Voip and Internet phones require broadband, like DSL or cable modem, to operate. His Voip was simple to set up, Rosenthal recalled. He plugged his cable modem line into the Voip modem, which he then connected to a phone handset.

Internet phone systems are more expensive and require more technical experience to install and operate than traditional phone systems, Ewing said. Hardware and software can run from several thousand dollars to the tens of thousands.

The service operates independently of any computer. But since his PC and his phone shared the same broadband connection, flaws emerged, Rosenthal recalled. While call clarity usually was fine, he often transmits large documents or attachments over his cable modem and such transmissions interfered with his calls, leading to static or a lost call, he said. Local calls also require the caller to dial a 1 plus the area code and phone number, and users cannot dial 911, he said.

"When it worked well, it worked like a good cell phone," he said.

Rosenthal dropped the service earlier this year when his cable broadband provider couldn't clear up transmission interference between e-mail attachments and Voip calls, he said. So now, as Rosenthal awaits closing on his new home, he's also considering installing Voip service there as well. The home will be wired for home networking, meaning Internet phones can be easily set up throughout the house, he said.

And then there's the issue of cost. "I'm just looking to keep the phone bill low," he said.
