June's Broadband Winners

Vonage In Print News
June 17, 2003

The cyberpunk movement among science fiction writers a few years ago had a saying: "The street finds its own use for things." That idea seems to have informed our picks for this month. We were impressed by players using technology in different ways, or sliding around the usual market barriers to create new ideas. In other words, originality counts. On the other hand, originality, pretty much by definition, requires leaving behind the hard-earned experience of those who made the standard stuff work. Even though originality may impress us, we're not necessarily going to invest in it just yet.

SkyLinc: This British company promises to provide "fibre grade services at DSL prices," and to provide "full U.K. broadband coverage from just 18 base- stations" (although that actually means something like 87 percent of small and medium businesses rather than actual 100 percent geographic coverage.) How? With balloons. SkyLinc's Low-Cost Integrated Broadband Radio Access (LIBRA) system would hang base stations from tethered aerostats at an altitude of 1.5 kilometers. It's not an entirely new concept, granted. It offers a big chunk of what makes satellite service attractive -- massive coverage per base station -- without the enormous costs and risks. Thus, back in the '90's various startups kicked the high-altitude stable platform idea around as a way to provide voice service over a large area. What makes SkyLinc a winner is the illustrations. Instead of the usual sketches, SkyLinc has photos of an actual balloon with what looks like an actual base station slung beneath it. You'd be surprised how many points that will rake in.

Vonage: Voice over IP has been around for a while. But, especially over narrowband connections, there were always issues with sound quality, and the technology remained mostly a hobbyist toy. But Vonage has managed to create a business model around using the bandwidth on a DSL connection to provide Voip in competition with the RBOCs. In Vonage's hands, Voip is truly becoming a mass market service. The reason we've chosen to recognize them now is because of their resale deal with Armstrong Cable. While the service will be sold under a different name, and Armstrong (which offers service in five eastern states) comes in 14th on a list of cable providers that isn't all that long, it represents Vonage's first resale deal with an MSO, and potential wedge into the cable market. With cable operators looking to add voice to their bundles, partnering with Vonage could start to look increasingly attractive if the Armstrong experience proves positive.

BellSouth [NYSE: BLS]: This is two months in a row for BellSouth. This month we were impressed by their announcement of plans to upgrade the last 19 DSL-free central offices in the state of Georgia. For Georgia completists out there, that's the towns of Arlington, Grantville, Lumber City, Sardis, Concord, Cusseta, Hamilton, Johnson's Corner, Gay, Leary, Kingston, Gibson, Lumpkin, Smithville, Luthersville, Wadley, Newton, Richland and Woodbury. The company has upgraded central offices in more than 100 formerly unserved towns through a partnership initiative with the state, including tax incentives, announced in May 2000.
