Save Big With VoIP

Vonage In Print News

Smart Shoppers Can Save Big With Just A Little Effort

July 30, 2004

By Teresa McUsic

With job layoffs and salary cutbacks continuing in North Texas, saving money out of your monthly budget is more important than ever.

So I have developed a list of the top five money-saving ideas I've found over the past 18 months of writing this column.

Most are ideas I've used myself.

Of course, readers should still do as much research as possible before making any buying decisions.

Electricity: Come on, people, you've had access to different electric providers for more than two years now, but how many of you have even looked into alternatives? While only about 20 percent of households have switched electricity providers in the state, more than 36 percent of large businesses have a new provider.

It could be that the amount of savings is not important to you. But you should consider two things carefully:

The biggest savings will come in summer months, when TXU Electric boosts rates in what it calls "seasonal" adjustments.

If you compare savings in April, for example, between TXU and other retailers, the difference could be under $10 a month, depending on usage. In the summer, however, the savings can be as high as 20 percent of your bill.

Some alternate retailers are offering incentives, too, including frequent flier miles, box-seat tickets for Rangers games or paying with a credit card or on a prepayment basis. You can do it all online or through a customer representative. Many of the retailers waive the deposit if you have good credit, so there is no cost to switching -- but check first.

Check all 12 companies and their prices on the Public Utility Commission's Web site: or call (866) 797-4839.

Telephones: There is a lot of competition for your local phone service, as well as in the long-distance and cellular markets. And with competition, there are savings to be had.

Here are some of the choices:

  • For consumers in the Comcast service area, the cable company is offering attractive telephone deals that include local and long-distance service. Check out their deals at www.comcast.com or (888) 266-2278.
  • Several companies are offering Internet telephone service or will be by year's end, including AT&T, Charter and Verizon. Vonage, a leader in this area, is available online or through RadioShack, Best Buy and Circuit City. A broadband connection is required for the service, but you can use your regular phones.
  • Some users are dropping their regular land-line telephone and just using cellphones. One place to check out the cellphone deals in your area, is www.telebright.com or (800) 550-9414. When I plugged in my ZIP code in the online service, I found 186 plans. The screening process, which asks questions about usage and monthly fee parameters, whittles the number down.

Do your homework on the Web, then go to a wireless store and get your best deal.

Vehicles: Now is a good time to buy a car as dealers clear out this year's models to make room for next year's. Up-to-date rebate, financing and pricing information, detailed descriptions of makes and models of vehicles and car-buying tips can be found on several Web sites.
Among the most popular free sites, according to a J.D. Power study, are Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com), www.Edmunds.com and www.ConsumerReports.org.

For information on local dealers' prices, go to the free Web sites www.carsdirect.com, www.invoicedealer.com and www.car.com. For car-buying strategies, one of the better sites is www.carbuyingtips.com.

Product shopping: Before you buy anything from a microwave to a lawn mower, check out some of the price comparison Web sites. Consumer World.org, a noncommercial guide to consumer information with more than 2,000 consumer resources, recommends www.shopping.com for checking out prices. Another Web site with up-to-date listings by item is www.pricegrabber.com.

Groceries: Texas is now the No. 1 state for www.cutouthunger.org, a free Web site that cross-references Kroger's weekly sales with the Sunday newspaper coupons, thus enabling shoppers to get the lowest prices on groceries. Many readers tell me they are saving money with this site, which is updated weekly.

In June, more than 7,000 Texas consumers used the site, 35 percent more than in Georgia, where it originated, according to Stephanie Nelson, who launched the program to encourage shoppers to donate groceries at low or no cost.

If you don't shop at Kroger, the Web site also has a new feature called the Virtual Coupon Organizer, an interactive database of all the Sunday newspaper coupons.

This tool allows shoppers to create "Best Deals" lists for any store.

Prescription drugs: If you have high monthly prescription drug costs, it makes sense to shop around. Consumer advocates say that Costco and Sam's Club consistently have lower prices than most drug retailers, and you don't have to be a member to use their pharmacies.

Another place to check drug prices is the companies checked out by Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Governors of both states sent health officials to Canada to investigate Internet drugstores based there. They now offer state-run Web sites that link those drugstores with the public.

Check the Web sites out at www. state.mn.us/ cgi-bin/portal/mn/ jsp/home.do?agency Rx and www.drugsavings.wi.gov.

North Dakota refers residents to www.Canadadrugs.com and www.RXNorth.com for lower- cost prescription drugs.
