aot2002: Vonage used a Cisco ATA 186 phone device until just a few months ago (I signed up on September 24, 2003 and got one). They have switched to the Motorola MTA phone device. After watching this forum for a while, it appears to me that the Motorola device solved some problems that the Cisco device had, but it introduced other problems. At the time I ordered Vonage, they recommended the Netgear router. I bought the one they recommended, plugged everything in according to the directions and it all worked. I did not need to do any port forwarding, etc. I was really just trying to clarify your blanket statement that the router has to have the ports open or Vonage will not work. It may be true for the Motorola unit, but not everyone has the Motorola unit...
