Vonage a topic similiar to this one has already been created 3 months ago, but the answer

a topic similiar to this one has already been created 3 months ago, but the answer to that topic was basically for the author to re arrange his network and put the RT31P2 in front as his primary router. something i dont want to do.

so heres my run down (for the sake of simplicity, this paragraph does not need to be read, its just a run down of my config, for anyone that needs it )
ive setup routers for several people and a configuration like this i would assume is simple enough but due to lack of configuration options its not.
so here is my dilemma, i have 1 pre existing linksys router , and due to events beyond my control i now have a RT31P2 which will go upstairs for convenience, and my old router will stay downstairs, i want to use the RT31P2 as a switch only and i want it behind my router, and still have port forwarding functionality to my upstairs machine. i accomplished this already using these steps, basically i disabled dhcp on the RT31P2, gave it the default gateway of my old router 192.168.1.1, and instead of plugging my internet link from my old router to the wan port of the RT31P2, i plugged into one of the 3 ports, hence making it a switch, simple enough, i have internet connectivity to all my machines and i have port forwarding, and in a perfect world id be finished, BUT, it seems if you dont plug your internet link into the wan port of the RT31P2, the phone ports wont look for a valid connection (and your phone lights dont turn on )

so ill ask the question again, is it possible to use the RT31P2 as a SWITCH ONLY, and still have Voip connectivity ???? i read several post, everyone said yes, but didnt give any instructions on how to, and the author usally was told to make the RT31P2 the primary router. I i have just setup my RT31P2, as a switch only, i dont need to be schooled on how to setup it as a switch or told to make the RT31P2 my primary router, right now as a switch it works perfectly, i can browse the web, my port forwarding still works, and its almost seamless. but it seems if nothing is plugged into the wan/internet port, the Voip doesnt work. thanks in advance :?:

Use the Linksys RT31P2 as a switch only?

as a side note, i do realize i can purchase a standalone switch and split the connection
No. Although your machine hanging off the RT31 is working to the internet,
if that is true, i wonder if the RT31P2 is hard wired not to look for internet access
Although your machine hanging off the RT31 is working to the internet, that is
reading that and trying to understand your reasoning, doesnt make sense, there
See if this works: 1. Disable NAT and DHCP on the RT31P2 2. Connect a patch
Let me try to clarify. For the sake of our discussion, the LinkyRT31 routes
FIRST OFF, thanks 200 to Blademan for that post, im pretty sure i would of given
LOL i fixed it 2 hours ago, and it took me 10 minutes to write my post, and it looks
