I have different equipment but a system that was configured like yours, and I didn't want to change anything I didn't have to. I just plugged the RT31P2 into an open ethernet port on my old router, hooked up the power cable, and everything worked right out of the box. I didn't have to do any port forwarding or to set the RT31P2 in the DMZ or anything.

My advice is to try it without changing any settings on your old router first. If that works (like it did for me), then just leave everything else alone and you're good to go. If not, you'll need to either forward ports or place the RT31P2 in the DMZ (or whatever your NetGear calls a totally open system).

I have an excellent and fast cable modem connection, so I have not needed QoS. I have my Vonage set to the highest quality (highest bandwidth) and have had no problems with voice quality or with any of my other devices when making large downloads.
