You're now using the VT1005 as a router, passing all your network traffic through it, and truth is, its a lousy router, so on a high speed line, its not surprising that you'd see much slower network performance.
The way you had it before should work well, **IF** the Netgear allows you to set QoS to make Voip traffic from your VT1005 highest priority. If your Netgear is not capable of QoS, or you don't have the QoS set right, then you'll experience what you were seeing before - delay and choppy audio when your internet link is heavily loaded.
I'm not familiar with that Netgear router, so can't provide any more specific information then that.
