Vonage You don't believe me, but it is possible, and YOU can do it just like I did - only it's

You don't believe me, but it is possible, and YOU can do it just like I did - only it's a sort of VIRTUAL portability. The end result is you get to hook up to Vonage from the START, and use your existing phone number. What you will need: 1) A screwdriver 2) The ability to use CALL FORWARD on your existing (non-Vonage) phone line. 2a) For some reason COX Communications would not let me forward my number to the Vonage Temporary Number, so I had to set up an account at RingCentral.com. If you can forward your number to your temporary Vonage number, you can skip ahead on these instructions to STEP 3. 2b) Go to RingCentral.com So, if you go to RingCentral.com they will offer you a FREE SEVEN DAY TRIAL - go all the way through the registration process until it comes to payment - then CANCEL IT. (Go ahead a register a local number or a toll free number, whatever you can get for FREE.) When you CANCEL the order, within a few minutes you will receive an email offering you a FREE THIRTY DAY TRIAL. Sign up! 2c) Set up your RingCentral Account to forward calls to your VONAGE TEMPORARY PHONE NUMBER. 2d) FORWARD your non-Vonage telephone to the RingCentral.com number you just set up. 2e) Proceed to STEP 4 3) FORWARD YOUR EXISTING PHONE to the Vonage Temporary Number. (Usually *72 plus the number. Usually there must be some sort of answer to activate the feature.) (*73 usually removes the feature.) 4) Use the screwdriver to remove your existing phone connection - you're on your own here. 5) Connect your VONAGE phone service to your home system. YOU ARE DONE. Now, when your number is eventually ported to your Vonage account your existing phone service will automatically CANCEL, and calls will automatically go to the Vonage service. You will get an EMAIL from Vonage that this has taken place. When it does - just call: 1 888 898-4591 to Cancel your account at Ring Central. I just did everything to STEP 5, using a Ring Central Toll Free number. It workds just fine. Enjoy.
