As far as I know, Vonage itself does not support a "HOLD" feature (though I could be mistaken - there may be a "#" or "*" code for putting a call on hold). "Hold" is usually up to your local phone or in-house phone system, even with a POTS line, and is not provided by the phone company.
Most phones that do "HOLD" simply mute both inbound and outbound and keep the phone line seized. Then if it's a multiline phone, you can use the other line. Vonage or your POTS service is not even aware that the line is on HOLD, they just know the line is seized so they don't disconnect it.
You'd want a telephone that can play some music instead of muting the outbound signal. I think phones like that are available as regular POTS-style phones. You plug it into your Vonage adapter, and you've got music on hold. And you have control over the music.
