You are correct in that the second number is not a true second line. Right now you would have to have another ATA-186 to get a second line from Vonage. Someone (I'll refrain from saying who) :wink: told us a couple months ago that the second line feature would be coming soon, but so far no announcements or explanations as to what might have happened.
You could of course get a second account and a second ATA-186, but that seems a bit like overkill unless you are doing a large volume of faxes. For the occasional outgoing FAX, you could just use your regular Vonage line, and for incoming faxes, you could use one of those FAX-to-email services (eFax is one; it even offers a free service if you let them assign the incoming number somewhat randomly, but I think even their for-pay service is a lot cheaper than a second line). Another site that will give you a free number (which can be used for incoming faxes, voicemail, or both) is http://voicemail.k7.net/ - I think with that one you get a Seattle area number. But if having a local FAX number is real important to you, eFax may be the only way to go (short of getting another Vonage or traditional line), and they will charge you a monthly fee if you pick the location of your FAX number (see http://www.efax.com/ ). The plus side with either of these services is you aren't tied to a physical FAX machine - you can get your faxes wherever you receive your e-mail.
But I sure hope Vonage gets that second line on the ATA-186 going soon. This is the other major thing I wish we could get some sort of progress report on.
