Vonage You are almost certainly going to need a router. Most Internet Service Providers

You are almost certainly going to need a router.

Most Internet Service Providers will only provide you with one IP address (in other words, one network device at a time may access the Internet).

A switch is a simple device that allows multiple network devices to talk to each other. So if you hook up a switch, all of your network devices will start clamoring your modem for a connection to the Internet, and the modem will accept the first request it finds and refuse all other devices.

A router is a somewhat more complex device that "fools" the modem into thinking that there is only one network device talking to it, and it "splits" the connection to as many devices as you need.

If you need a router, I recommend the Linksys WRT54GL, which I think is on special at Amazon.com for about $50 or so (after a $10 rebate). It's a solid router and has QoS, so it can help you manage the priority of your various devices. But there are also a lot of other good routers out there.
