Of course you could just run a small email server or what-have-you to solve that. Of course I encourage you to set it all up and test until you are happy before nuking anything. By the way, you could look at Skype if you really want to use Asterisk. Used all over the world, new phones and conference phones make it very practical. Very good rates.
As you can see, I'm not that particular as lon as you the user gets the features you can live with. Just pre-plan and try to keep in mind the rules for landline systems no longer apply.
It is a big leap, but it works, it really does. ;) ) )
