Vonage Wow, ok this gets a little off topic but here goes.... I feel OK skipping ads

Wow, ok this gets a little off topic but here goes....

I feel OK skipping ads on network TV because the television companies have been given free use of our airwaves and are broadcasting the material in the clear. In addition the ads are intrusive because programming isn't available while the ad is being displayed.

I feel quasi-OK about skipping ads on non-network TV (sorry Jon Stewart) because I am already paying a premium for watching the channel via my cable or satellite bill. I also feel that most programming could easily come up with alternative forms of revenue (for example product placement). The problem with ads being intrusive also plays a role.

I go to the movies early to watch the ads because I feel that they still put some care into how they are presenting things. If I had a high definition TV I might actually watch ads that were produced in high def. I do watch ads on TV that catch my attention in some way.

I feel that web sites, especially ones like this that support community content, deserve my support by counting my impressions. In addition I don't feel the ads are intrusive, for example I do block pop-up ads as I feel they violate the law in that they are unauthorized use of my computer. I tend not to re-visit sites that use heavy handed CSS techniques to force their ads down my throat.

So, I don't use Adblock because I find it unnecessary to block most ads. If this site, or another I frequented, were to not take my complaints about intrusive ads seriously I would stop visiting the site rather than make use of the resources without participating in revenue generation for the site.

Basically, if everyone used an ad blocker then there would be no free sites like this to go to, everyone would have to move to a subscription model or a sponsored model. So, if the ads don't bother me, why block them?

I am not certain whether this description, or even my personal beliefs are internally consistant on this issue. I have always been a little concerned over the concept of skipping ads on cable TV, but it is the best I can do at this point.
