Vonage What aftermarket firmware are you using? Currently, I am running HyperWRT

What aftermarket firmware are you using?

Currently, I am running HyperWRT Thibor 14. Thibor contains preset settings that work pretty well for BitTorrent with the option to adjust them as needed. Most of the newer HyperWRT variants do, and most of the aftermarket firmware has a setting that at least gets the job done.

The two significant variables for P2P on a Linksys Linux-based router are:

1. Number of connections in the IP table:

The Linksys default for this is 2,048 connections. When you run out of entries here, your router will refuse to allow any new connections. If you need more connections, you can adjust the number in the GUI in Thibor, or with any firmware you can manipulate them by putting the following in your startup script:

echo 4096 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack_max

(in this case, 4,096 is the number of connections to allocate).

I recommend going no higher than 4,096 with this, and keeping it to the minimum number you need (more connections = more memory consumed = impacts on overall performance). Mine is set at about 3,000.

2. Idle Timeout for Active Connections:

This is the amount of time that a connection that still is listed as "Active" is allowed to survive without activity before being marked as a candidate for reuse. The Linksys default on this is an unfortunate FIVE DAYS.

The number is in seconds, and can be found on the Thibor GUI or manipulated by altering the second number in the below command:

echo "600 1800 120 60 120 120 10 60 30 120" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeouts

In this example, you are setting an idle timeout of 1800 seconds, or about 30 minutes. I have mine set to 4 hours, as I use Telnet a lot and I find it frustrating to have a connection drop.

As to the DNS cache, it uses the Linux service "dnsmasq" and most of the aftermarket firmwares have this on a pretty solid version of dnsmasq. I don't think you'll see much difference either way. I leave it on to reduce traffic going out on the 'net, but DNS lookups are brief and don't take a lot of bandwidth.

My WRT54G V4 is now at 42 days, 18:43:22 of continuous uptime and counting, under near constant BitTorrent load the entire time.

WRT54GL p2p Setting

I use Bittorrent now and again with my WRT54G v4 as my main router with aftermarket
NateHoy has written a few articles about using the WRT54G with Vonage and P2P.
I've used those guides for QOS and they are great and very well put together but
Which "aftermarket firmware" are you running? There are lots of different ones
NateHoy and DallasFlier, I'm using almost the exact same setup you both have.
That's exactly how I have mine configured, and it works fine for P2P and VoIP.
