Well, you certainly have enough bandwidth, so that's not the problem. Vonage pulls 90k max, and it looks like you have MANY times that, so Vonage should not be killing your network.

I understand your point with the QoS - you have the opposite problem. I know QoS probably isn't going to help, but it was worth a try, because turning on QoS allows the router to do a better job of shaping your Internet traffic. It's something to test.

The WRT54G (at least in the pre-V5 units) does a good job of handling traffic up to about 30mbps, which you aren't even approaching. So your router should be running nearly at idle even when you are maxing out your bandwidth. However, I'm not as familiar with the new V5 units. I cannot imagine they'd overload with that connection, though.

Other than that, I don't know. A few things you can try...

I assume all or most of your Internet clients are plugged into the WRT54G, and not the Vonage adapter? Is there a difference between the two (eg. do clients work at all if they are plugged directly into the WRT54G)?

Can you ping IP addresses directly? Try pinging 4.2.2.1 from a command line when this is happening. If you can, then you might have a problem with the DNS cache in the WRT54G. I know this is an issue in the Vonage-provided WRTP54G router, maybe the new V5's have it too. In that case, enter your ISP-provided DNS servers into the WRT54G and turn off DNS caching.

What other services do you have running? Are you running any connection-heavy services like P2P (BitTorrent, eMule, etc)? Those might be overloading the connection pool on your router, which would mean that no new connections can be opened. This is a known issue in ALL the Linksys WRT54G-series routers, which can be fixed with third party firmware (which, sadly, the WRT54G V5 cannot accept).

You might also try exchanging the WRT54G V5 with a WRT54GL or WRT54GS, both of which run Linux and can accept third party firmware, which really helps these units out.
