Vonage Reviews

Vonage Well my router showed up today and after some theatrics with the home wiring everything

Well my router showed up today and after some theatrics with the home wiring everything is now set up.

My observations are as follows;

Call quality is not as good as I get from my local CLEC, on one call I got some static for a while, which cleared up. I notice a bit of delay/echo on calls at times and my mom (in VT, 2000 miles away) commented that it sounded a bit like I was on a Walkie-Talkie.

Overall I would say the sound quality is accepteable. I primarily use the phone for business and would not think it would bother too many customers of mine unless the noise problems become chronic. I've been on the phone today probably for 3 hrs since installing and only had problems for about one minute. The FW version on the router seems to have upgraded itself from 1.26 to 1.27.01.

As far as networking goes, there are a few things I still can't get working the way I have them configured. I have the RT31P2 hooked up behind my Comcast cable modem and then have one of the switch ports from that connected to the WAN port on my Netgear wifi access point which is getting a DHCP addy from the RT31. All of the client machines are connected to the Netgear box (for a variety of reasons).

Some of the services I use that require port forwarding do not seem to work now. I tried putting the IP address of the netgear in for forwarding ports but it doesn't seem to work correctly (at least not all the time). I also tried putting the IP address of the Netgear into the RT31 as the DMZ address and some services still don't work. I figure that I will probably be forced to move one or two client machines to sit directly behind the Linksys box unless I can come up with another solution for getting a few of these port forwarded services to work.

All in all I would say that this has worked out about as well as I would have expected. I'm sure I will appreciate the extra $25 a month I am saving on my phone bill. I haven't tried faxing yet, hopefully that still works.
