Well, it's been another wasted afternoon getting everything functioning - and finding out what wasn't functioning - like my brand new WRTP54G router!

Yesterday when I had so many problems getting my router phone lights to come on, Vonage downloaded a new version of firmware into the router ( I was finally able to get the lights to come on, but of course I then started experiencing the same voice degradation I'd experienced with the PA2 adapter during internet application usage. This is what started my participation in this thread. I placed a call into Vonage and decided I would not wait till Monday for someone to get back to me, so I called them back this afternoon.

The guy I talked to this time told me my entire problem - the lagging voice degradation and the beeping (mentioned in another message) I was getting when placing a call (just a curioisity really) were all due to the wrong version of firmware. Imagine my surpirse when I checked the firmware status and found that it was the original firmware (0.18)! For some reason, the firmware upgrade Vonage had done yesterday didn't take.

So, thus began a long series of "power the modem down," "now power the router down," etc., and then several attempts of downloading the right version of firmware - each of which ended with the rather disconcerting phrase: "Upgrade are failed!" (I had visions of a group of Vonage outsourced support techs sitting around a Cabana in some country, sucking on Margueritas having a good laugh about that). If it wasn't so maddening I might have been amused. The end result was the Vonage guy told me that the new router I had was toast. In every case he'd seen, if the firmware upgrade wouldn't take, it was a defective router.

So, back to Radio Shack and then home again with a new router for yet another attempt. At least this time I'd had some practice doing the install. Too much practice. I could teach classes.

This time the install went pretty smooth. Before I called Vonage to activate the new router, I did the firmware upgrade, which worked like a champ. I then called and went through the power down/u cycle that makes up the activation sequence. Although this time the guy had me to a MAC address clone - had something to do I think with the fact that I had just swapped a router. In any event, the two phone lights didn't come on, of course. So we cycled a few more times and they finally did light up - which was good because my call with the tech had just got dropped.

I don't know about anyone else, but getting the phone call dropped during critical support efforts seems to be par for the course with Vonage. I got dropped four times yesterday and had to explain the situation four different times!

I don't know yet if the firmware upgrade will solve the lag issue during heavy internet app usage - I'll find out soon. However, there is one shred of hope - the strange two beeps that I was hearing when I placed a call are gone! So, I am keeping my fingers crossed that this guy was right about the firware fixing the lag too.
