Well . . . depending on your level of expertise, there is not much to it.

You just need to configure a static IP address on your Windows XP Pro PC and then configure port forwarding on the Dlink router to forward port 3389 (RDP) to that IP address.

For instance, if the internal IP address of your router is 192.168.0.1, you might assign your PC the static address of 192.168.0.200. Then configure port forwarding on the router to forward port 3389 to 192.168.0.200. When configuring the static IP on your PC, be sure to include the IP address of your router as the "Default Gateway" address. You'll probably also want the IP of your router set as the DNS address on your PC.

There shouldn't be anything to configure on the modem - it just provides the connection and allows your router to get a public IP address for Internet connectivity.

The only other thing you will need is a way to get the public IP address; if you have a dynamic IP address from your ISP (one that changes periodically), you need someway to determine the current public IP address that your router is getting (your Dlink router should get a public IP address from your modem . . . this is the address that you will need to make an RDP connection from somewhere else back to your home PC).

If you happen to have a static public IP address, then its obviously easy, if you have a dynamic address, there are tools that will update so you will be able to reach your dynamic address anytime.

Now if you are actually running both routers (Dlink and 2442) as routers (that's not the best idea), you will need to give the second router a static PRIVATE IP address on the WAN or Internet side (So if your first router has a private address of 192.168.0.1 you could assign 192.168.0.2 to the WAN or INTERNET side of the second router). Then forward 3389 on the first router to the second router (192.168.0.2). The second router will be assigning addresses in a different range to everything behind it, so lets say the private address side of router 2 is using 192.168.1.x - give your PC a static address of 192.168.1.200. On the second router, port forward 3389 to 192.168.1.200. So . . . port 3389 traffic (RDP) comes onto your network and hits router #1 WAN, gets forwarded through to the private side and on to 192.168.0.2, which is Router #2 WAN, which then passes it through to its private side and forwards on to 192.168.1.200, which is your Windows XP PC.

Just remember - each router has a WAN (Front or public) side and a LAN (Back or private) side.

Router #1 WAN = Real public IP address from your ISP (Dynamic or static, but public, and thus, reachable from the outside world)
Router #1 LAN = 192.168.0.1

Router #2 WAN = 192.168.0.2 (So FRONT of router #2 can talk to BACK of Router #1)

Router #2 LAN = 192.168.1.1 (Now everything else behind Router #2 will use 192.168.1.x as IP)

Windows XP PC = 192.168.1.200 (Private IP address reachable from the private or LAN side of Router #2)
