Vonage Well, after having Cingular... I can say that they won't even lift a finger to help

Well, after having Cingular... I can say that they won't even lift a finger to help you,

Valid point. Their "offers" compared to the rate plan I had were more like a UFIA than a warm welcome. Nearly 1/3rd the minutes for 2x the price, and I'd have to buy a new phone. So, I gave them a most solicited FIA and ported to Vonage. As a parting shot, they sat on the number port for awhile, then finally ported it 2 days into the next billing cycle, and charged me for a full month's use! Customer "service" picked up the phone sooner (20-30 mins vs. 45-90 mins) with Cingular than AT&T, but the treatment wasn't any better. Reception was terrible then, it's still just as bad now when I used a friend's Cingular phone. I was averaging 10-20 dropped calls back then. The only reason I stayed with AT&T back then was because of how good the rate plan was.

During all of this, I've had Alltel for ~10 years and they really stepped up to the plate when I started having issues with Cingular. They actually matched the old AT&T rate plan for me and threw in my choice of any of their phones (even the high end ones). I was having occasional dropped calls with Alltel (~1-2/week, compared to AT&T's 10-20/day) and they gave me a few fun toys to play with to figure out exactly what was causing the failures. They also threw one of every high-end phone they had at me and had me compile a report of how the various phones performed under varying conditions, especially under extreme conditions. For all of my work on that, they gave me whichever phone I wanted in the store w/matching toys (holster, chargers, bluetooth, etc) , credited me a whole month of service (and then some), and gave me unlimited cellular broadband (3.1Mbps) for my laptop for an extra $5/mo. Since switching phones, I've yet to drop a call... which does introduce a totally new problem - I've lost the ability to drop calls when I REALLY don't want to talk to the person. I used to be able to unscrew the antenna on my old phone, then cup my hand around the top portion of the phone, and the call would get dropped... oh darn... BUT I can't do that anymore. It's safe to say, I'm VERY satisfied with Alltel. They tend to be a bit behind the times in terms of technology, BUT, they do have the reliability & customer service parts right, which matter most to me.

Vonage wouldn't be charging this if they were not told to by the "unspecified states".
Not sure about your area, but here (Florida) it's ~20% tax on cell phones.
