Well, I returned my D-Link VWR after picking up a Linksys WRTP54G at Best Buy.

Fortunately I am still within the 30-day trial period so I was able to do this without getting fined by Vonage even though they are knowingly deploying a faulty product.

Port forwarding wouldn't have been an option for me anyway since I do some security product testing. I'm sure there must also be other scenarios where it would be a problem - especially if it can hose up the router as jasonboche reported.

Before the swap, however, I also found another problem with the VWR - it didn't let me print through a network print sharing device.

I have an Airplus APSUSB201 USB print server - one of those little boxes that let's you share a USB printer by plugging the USB printer into the device and then plugging the device into an ethernet port on your router. Then any system on the network can print to the print server's IP address.

The VWR was blocking all of the print jobs. They would just go into the local system print queue and keep trying (and failing) to print over and over. I could, however, PING the device and access its web interface through its IP address. Oddly enough, trying to send something from the command line with LPR would wake-up the printer, but the job still wouldn't go through.

With the Linksys router, everything works fine. Just plugged in the print server and it worked without any configuration needed. So it's most certainly another VWR issue - though I don't know if it's specific to my device or if it would affect other print server devices as well.

I also saw in antoher thread that some people have security configuration problems with this device:

I configured it for WPA-PSK without any problems though.

I did also notice that the DNS proxy "feature" was buggy as hell. I was getting frequent name resolution failures and didn't know why. During one outage I decided to ping my DNS servers to see what was up, so I opened my connection details and saw my only DNS was the router! I can't believe they make that the default setting considering how buggy it is.

Of course, in all fairness, the Linksys router also enables the DNS proxy by default and it is just as buggy on that device. So this may be more of a general DNS proxy issue than a specific vendor issue.

So to summarize the D-Link VWR problems I know of at the time I'm writing this (firmware VWR-11.4.0-r060331-1.00.03-r060627):

1. You cannot enable the DMZ.

2. The device puts out lots of interference (though you shouldn't see this unless you have an antenna based TV close by).

3. It blocks printing to [at least] an Airlink USB print sharing device - though I don't know if other similar devices would be affected.

4. Some people report problems configuring security settings.

5. Port fowarding configurations may cause lock-ups.

6. The DNS proxy feature doesn't work well (though this affects Linksys devices as well).

With the exception of the interference problem, this should all be fixable via a firmware upgrade - but both Vonage and D-Link seem to have been in the process of "fixing" this device for months...
