Then the Greater Vancouver Regional District and Telus petitioned the CRTC to make all Greater Vancouver (from Lions Bay to Langley) a toll free calling area between the different rate centres within the regional district as it required a rate adjustment. Therefore all the rate centres within Greater Vancouver have the same local calling area, but the separate rate centres still exist of course. Prior to that, it used to be long distance to call from say, parts of Coquitlam to parts Surrey, which is just across the bridge, depending on what rate centre you were in Coquitlam (Port Moody, New Westminster, or Port Coquitlam) and what rate centre you were calling to in Surrey (Whalley, Newton, Cloverdale, White Rock, Bridgeview, Fort Langley, or Langley). It was nuts! Thank goodness for Vonage where none of this matters, except for number porting!
