We had a crazy Texas-style storm a few weeks back. It took out the power and must have surged the phone lines because it blew out Phone Port 1 on my Linksys router.

I called Vonage tech support Sunday morning, was connected relatively quickly and started the 30 minute troubleshooting process. We rebooted the router, rebooted my computer, checked that I have Internet connection (which it did, just the phone 1 port was out). rebooted again, checked for Internet traffic again. Over and over and over. The tech support finally determined Port 1 was bad and enabled the 2nd port, which worked. He test called me and the sound was clear.

Just as I was about to hang up I asked if I would have to buy a new router if I wanted a 2nd line? The tech support moved my phone line BACK to Port 1 (which still wasn't working) then told me tier 2 support can help me with getting a new router.

Tier 2 support didn't bother to read my case when he first answered, so I asked him to review the case details he quickly said the router was busted and would have a new Linksys immediately sent out via 2-day DHL. I asked him to enable Phone port 2 and he said Port 2 was fried and nothing can be done.

Knowing the Tier 2 tech support didn't bother to lift a finger and just approved the new router (which is good in the long run), I called Tech Support again and asked them to troubleshoot Port 2. They told me the MAC was already reassigned to the new router being delivered and it would be difficult to change. Knowing these guys follow scripts I decided not to push the issue so I forwarded my home calls to my cell and waited for my new router.

Three days later (2-day DHL doesn't arrive in 2 days) the new router arrived, plugged in, and is now working.
