Vonage uses the term Area Code and rarely 'exchange' so this confuses alot of ppl..

you know yourself form normal telephone service, that you have a number looks like 1-234-567-8901 where 1 is the Long Distance Access number, 234 is the area code, 567 is the local exchange and 8901 is the number in that exchange..
an area code generally covers a large area of a province, (changing now with so many numbers in large cities) and then the exchange is what tells the telephone provider what city in that area code you are calling.. most cities have many exchanges..

because of large populations and many ppl having cell phones, and landlines in their homes, they have run out of area codes, (all area codes used to have either a 1 or a 0 in the middle, not the case anymore) so in Vancouver you have 2 area codes now, same in Toronto, where they have 2 area codes for the city and 2 more area codes for outlying area's,
hence 10 digit local dialling, beacuse th eperson accross the street may have a different area code, you can't dial 7 digits anymore, this stil ldoesn' tmean it's a chargeable long distance call..

what you can do to determine if your calls are local from your friends, is to have them call you, only dialling 7 or 10 digits..

in canada, if you do not dial a 1 you will not be charged.. so if your friends can call you 10 digits they will not pay for the call..

in the phone book you wil llikely find a page that tells you the local calling area, atleast our bell books here in Southern ON do, they say "Calling From" and then "Can Call Locally To:"
it wil list your city, and it's exchanges and then will list every city and those exchanges that you may dial w/o charge.. some calls may be to a different area code but will still be local..

next summer here in the 519 we are getting anew area code 'overlayed' so I could get 2 lines in my own home with 2 different area codes, but both area's would have an exchange registered to my city or a city local to me..

it can be confusing, but it's not that bad, if your friends are dialling a 1 then you need to find a new number that may be local to them, if Vonage has one that is.. if they are not dialling 1 then just keep your number the way it is..

as far as your outgoing calls, because of the way that Vonage is set up, you can dial anyone in your 778 area code only 7 digits, Vonage automatically appends the area code to thoe numbers, if you are dialling to your friends in the 604 then you must dial it 11 or 10 digits.. as djino said there is no difference to your billing whether you call Vancouver, Toronto or New York, it's all a local call with Vonage :D

sorry it's such a long post, i kinda just got on a roll.. lol..
