Vonage tech support is blowing smoke up your .... if they told you that phone will work with their service. The only way you could use that phone would be to get a SoftPhone account, which will only give you 500 minutes of use and a different phone number (on top of whatever you're currently paying).
I've not used that IP phone, but I still think the Aastra analog phones would have higher quality than that Linksys unit. Aastra makes some great IP phones, BUT, since Vonage won't hand out the SIP credentials to allow you to use your own IP phone instead of the Vonage adapter, it's a lost cause. If you think the tech was telling you the truth, do yourself a favor and call up tech support and request your SIP credentials BEFORE ordering anything - they're NOT going to give them to you.
Just because something is an IP phone doesn't mean it automatically has better sound quality. The speakers/microphones/audio amplifiers built into a phone have the most bearing on sound quality, not the method of sound transmission. In the case of Vonage, all of the adapters and phones are using the same data compression codec, many of them are even using the exact same chipset to do the audio coding. The noticable sound quality difference between the various Vonage adapters can be traced down to the audio amps inside them.
Trust me, as soon as Vonage gives people their SIP credentials to use any way they wish (which appears to be never), I'll slap one of these on my desk:
But, I'll probably die before Vonage would ever do this. They are the AOL of Voip. Lots of marketing, decent feature set, terrible customer support. Looking for basic phone service? Vonage is it. Looking to do more advanced things? Look elsewhere.
