Vonage has some great potential for business. The service works relatively well, but porting numbers is not V's expertise. With the POTS numbers, they don't get the account number, carrier, lead number, etc... In my situation, I was porting a non-lead number to Vonage. After 4 conference calls, with the loosing phone company, customer service rep, portablility rep and myself, we finally got things moved...2 months later... As for Switched 800 service, they really don't understand how to port a number between carriers. The website lacks the proper interfaces to get the information right and as well, when you call into the call center, there is a good effort to make the swictch, but when a rep is talking about adding a new Voip line and you are moving a toll free number WATCH OUT!!! There are two big gotcha's with this. First, the loosing company requires very specific information and it must match their records, otherwise they will not release the number. This is from the days of 800 number slamming. It was big business in the early to mid 90's. The second even bigger issue is that if they loose the number to the toll free pool, that booger could be gone forever! Good toll free numbers are highly sought after and there are companies that search the toll free number pool constantly for vanity numbers and numbers that have repeating digits. So, I backed away for now and stayed with my current toll free provider. Switched Toll Free service is for something like this as, even though their reps don't understand it, you can simply "point" your toll free number at your lead/main Vonage number and keep right on rolling.

I would guess that for those that are needing a new toll free number or don't care if they have to change a number, their service will work fine. My guess is, like the Voip service, they will figure it out soon and have the porting and toll free service working pretty well!

Hope this helps!
