Vonage has asked the CRTC to give it until November (instead of July 3) to comply with the Commission's order to route all 9-1-1 calls on nomadic Voip services to the correct emergency centre. Vonage says that selecting, contracting, and training an appropriate call centre will take longer than the time allowed.

Interesting. We have all seen the order by the FCC in the US ordering e911 service to be provided in 120 days. Voip companies have been ordered to deliver the service to their customers and the RBOCs have been ordered to allow interconnection to the e911 switches. We have also seen that Vonage has since negotiated deals with the RBOCs for access. It appears that the Canadian solution will not be e911 (as this wasn't specified in the CRTC order, only basic 911 service was specified). It looks like Vonage is going to contract a third party call centre to receive and route 911 calls. I knew this already but I was hoping that Vonage would look at making a deal with the ILECs here for access to e911 instead like they have in the US.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
