Vonage Uniden TRU8xxx series phones seem to be the forum favorite. I have a set of them

Uniden TRU8xxx series phones seem to be the forum favorite. I have a set of them at all of my homes & now have a set at work as well. Works very well with the Vonage adapters.

The WRT54G 3.0 router can stay (NateHoy's the resident expert on the Linksys routers, but I believe the 3.0 version is still one of the "good" models). The WRTP54G is a good voice adapter, lousy router, alright wireless...but since you have the WRT54G, no need to use these functions on it unless you really wanted to. I have the RTP300, which is the WRTP54G sans wireless and love the sound quality of it.

Ah, cool! Someone who's adventurous. I used to run the Sveasoft firmware, but now run the HyperWRT firmware and can't say enough positive things for it - The HyperWRT (Thibor is what I run on my GSes) firmware takes this lowly Linksys router and turns it into something on-par with the low-end Cisco routers in terms of performance and configurability if you are comfortable with its commandline. For 99% of the people out there, the web interface that the add-on firmware leaves you will do far more than you'd ever need. The only reason to drop into the command line on these is to have a little bit of fun. As far as the household wiring goes, this shouldn't be too much of an issue. I'd suggest flipping through the Hard Wiring section of this website and see the common pitfalls & solutions so that your transition goes smoothly. It really isn't that difficult, just MAKE SURE you have truly disconnected the telco from your wiring before you add the Vonage adapter inline. Also, if your REN total (add 'em up from the labels on the undersides/backs of your phones) is more than 5.0, you might have problems.

You couldn't pay me to take a V-tech... That said, there are plenty of people who are happy with these for some reason. Very simple install, but very limited. No external ports on these to use other phones with, so forget using your Dish network box or fax machine with the IP8100, same with the corded phones.

Umm... the huge phone bills from Verizion/Sprint? but I really don't miss those. In switching to Vonage, I gained a ton of features that I didn't have before, like the e-mailed voice mails, instant (well, close nuf) activity logs on the web, SimulRing, portability of the adapter, and reliability. Yes, Vonage is actually more reliable in my area than the landline phone lines were, including hurricanes.

This is due to the nature of the cable internet network. The first cable modem systems were one direction only, providing downloads over the cable lines, uploads over the phone line. We've now progressed to everything over one wire, but the primary demand of consumers is more downloading than uploading. There are also physical reasons for this as well, with the cable TV system being designed to SEND signals. The whole receiving signals back from customers is a relatively new idea and they've had to install receiver nodes closer to the individual neighborhoods to support this. Comcast does have a business division with higher upload speeds, but they still are asymmetric, with the download speeds being higher. Until you go to something like a T1, SDSL, frame-relay, or fiber, you're very likely to see this same asymmetric pattern that you have. Normally it works out fine for most people. For some of us, we've just adapted by buying business or higher residential plans.
