Two observations - first, since you tried hooking the Vtech directly to the cable modem and bypassed the router completely, of course your primary problem isn't related to the router. My guess is - when you set up your service initially with Charter, your MAC address was registered with them - likely the MAC address of your computer, but possibly the MAC address of your router. Have you cloned the computer's MAC address in the router? Anyway, if you want to try to get it working with the router DISconnected, I'd try cloning both the computer's and then the router's MAC addresses in the Vtech and seeing if you can get it to work with either of those.
Or, to get it up and running WITH the router, follow these excellent and detailed instructions from another member here, Nate Hoy. The instructions say they're for a WRT54G with a RTP300 or WRTP54G, but your 18 month old WRT54G is the same thing, and just hook up the Vtech where Nate shows the RTP or WRTP54G. Fortunately, your WRT54G is absolutely the best router out there to front end your Vonage and your network, with the addition of the great 3rd party firmware that Nate references. I'm using exactly the same setup, I just didn't do all the work that Nate did to create that excellent guide!
