Two issues here:
- What to do with all those wires sticking out of the side of the house?
- Which wires correspond with which lines (line 1, line 2, etc)?

Your phone wiring is very probably Cat 5 or Cat 5E if new. This will have 8 conductors or 4 twisted pairs per cable.

The cheapest thing to do with the wires outside the house would be to buy an OUTDOOR GRADE electrical junction box (such as you might mount an outdoor floodlight to), run the wires in through the back or bottom, and connect the like-colored wires together as needed. Remember to seal in a waterproof manner.

Another option would be to buy a network interface device (NID) – the grey box you see for the phone connection on the outside of the house and use that. (These are also known as network interface units and demarc boxes). You can then install the NID and it would look like a “normal” phone box and also be ready for a phone connection.

It is standard practice to connect 2 lines so I recommend connecting the blue and orange pairs. That is, connect all the BLUE/white together, all the WHITE/blue together, all the ORANGE/white together, all the WHITE/orange together. See more below for the color scheme.

For 3 lines add the green pair.

Note- some residential jacks (inside the house) don’t even support the 3rd pair.

More on the colors:

The old color scheme for phone wiring was green and red for phone line 1 (“Christmas” as a mnemonic), black and yellow for phone line 2 (“Halloween”) and, very rarely, blue and white for line 3.

With Cat 5/5E, the pairs consist of wires with insulation that will be mostly one color with white stripes twisted with a wire that has mostly white with stripes of the same color.

Line 1 is BLUE/white, WHITE/blue

Line 2 is ORANGE/white, WHITE/orange

Line 3 is GREEN/white, WHITE/green

If you use a fourth line, it’s the brown/white pair.

If it is true phone line, it is color coded (4 different colors). The modular jacks
I guess what I'm looking for is what is the best way to hook up all the wires? I
Well, first off, the sticky message at the top of this forum is very good, but maybe
Thanks for the reply Steve, All the phone outlets in the house are jacked.
I just checked, I've got Cat5E out there, so 4 pairs. I'm only going to hook up 2 pairs. Seems
Screw type connectors should be fine. Alternately, you can use insulating crimps
I would recommend mounting the *outdoor* junction box a little above where the
