Today I realized that Vonage was getting a DHCP address from my ISP (Millenium Cable) but then giving my router a private IP address. This is no good for me because I run mail/web/etc servers on my home network that I need to be reachable from the outside world, and I did not want to use the limited port forwarding in the MTA when I have the much better facilities in my Netgear router.

My setup was (and still is):

cable modem -> Vonage MTA -> netgear router -> my PCs

After much playing about and frustrating dead-ends I finally made this work.

1) Disable NAT on the Vonage MTA.

2) Reboot everything in order (cable modem then Vonage mta then netgear router), and then reboot the cable modem *again* so that it gets a chance to "see" the netgear router through the MTA pass-through.

This worked for me, but the second reboot of the cable modem was important. I remember my cable installer telling me that the cable modem would need to be rebooted any time a different device was plugged into the network port, so I tried it and it worked.

Everything seems to be working just great now.

However, I have one question. I can no longer ping or http to 192.168.102.1. It seems that the MTA has turned off it's listeners. So if I ever want to change the configuration on my MTA it seems I'm screwed and I cannot find a way in the documentation to return the MTA to factory settings. This might be because my internal network is not 192.168.102.x - I use 192.168.0.x since that is the netgear default. But with the MTA in NAT mode I was still able to successfully ping/http to the MTA on 192.169.102.1.

So, just in case I need to make a change in the future, does anyone know how I would restore my MTA to its default settings? Or how I can get back into the http interface?
