Vonage This post is more of a note on my adventures than anything else, I just couldn't

This post is more of a note on my adventures than anything else, I just couldn't find anyone post anything with quite the same setup as I before I "took the plunge" with Vonage.

I've been looking at Vonage for a long time, but have passed in the past on actually getting it because I was afraid I'd run into issues. I saw many posts of people having issues and I have no "formal" training in networking. I have been a tinkerer though. I've seen some people have issues with Vonage and ReplayTV and it's IVS. I've seen some people have issues with Vonage and Smoothwall routers, which I also have. I also get my broadband internet via DSL, so it means I woudn't be eliminating my phone service anyway. I TRIED Comcast a year ago and was so appalled with the speed, I gave it back and said "No THANK YOU!!!" I had GREAT download speeds... 5Mbps, but upload speeds from 80-140Kbps!!! That is BARELY adequate for Voip, but not adequate for sending large files over the Internet (Replay IVS to my brother). DSL at least gives me 400+Kbps upload. I am now facing a move and it will be temporary (I'm hoping only a few months) so I'll be going with Comcast. They assure me they have improved.

I finally decided to order Vonage. I found that most of the issues people have is related to the router portion of the phone adapter that Vonage uses. I don't WANT another router... I like my Smoothwall... I have more control. What control do I need? I don't know, but I'm learning. When I originally signed up, they sent a router, but I told them I wanted the PAP2. They said they didn't issue those, but they could be purchased at a store, like Best Buy. That is what I did.

On my Smoothwall, I created an "ORANGE Port"... a DMZ-type port. Generally, the ORANGE doesn't provide any DHCP, so I found a mod that adds DHCP to ORANGE. I then obtained the MAC address of my PAP2 device and set the DHCP server to always assign the same IP address to that MAC address. I then set up several ports to forward to that IP address. One thing that I read was that UDP ports 10000-20000 need to be forwarded to the phone adapter. One issue is that my Replays each use a TCP port between that range. Thinking there MAY be an issue, I forwarded all the UDP ports minus the 3 TCP port numbers to the phone adapter. I also forwarded UDP ports 53, 69, 5060 and 5061. I plugged it all in... and voila... everything works.

I DID have one issue though. I tried to set up QoS controls. This only caused problems and decreased reliability. I have downloaded and uploaded huge files while using the phone... no problem. I sent a video file to my brother while talking on the phone and sending a fax. No problem what-so-ever.

If it matters to anyone, this is what I get in a speed test:

My Results
Download 2,242,848 bps
Upload 436,176 bps
QOS 60%
RTT 71 ms
MaxPause 438 ms

I now have a FAX machine (with it's own dedicated number) and a toll-free number. I am about to be married (This coming Sunday... July 10) and have been making tons of arrangements. Having unlimited calling has been great. I've talked with many people that would have been long-distance calls for as long as I wanted to and I've been able to have different people send me faxes. I've found that despite spending more money, I've actually saved money. Granted, this past month and a half has been a fluke, but I've been quite happy. I'm trying to talk my parents into getting Vonage as well.
