Vonage This is to just relate my current experience and get some feedback from others

This is to just relate my current experience and get some feedback from others - this is NOT a bash on Vonage (as I have yet to use Vonage)

I received my router yesterday - and plugged it in last night. - setup was Comcast RCA modem - RT31P2-VD - Phone 1 - and laptop. The RT31P2-VD was left in default mode. Unplugged the cable modem and then connected everything together. Powered up the cable modem and waited for normal status (for some reason "normal" is with constant cable and pc-link activity - but that's Comcast). Once it was fully operational, I powered up the RT31P3-VD and waited for the power light to become steady (indication of a Linksys router boot completion). I then powered up the laptop and had Internet with no problems. The phone light took a minute or 2 - but finally came on. Tested the phone - I had dial tone and called my cell phone. Then the problems started. I did all this with the router sitting on my desk, so now that everything works I wanted to move it to the shelf with the cable modem and out of my workspace. I never again saw the phone lights or got a dial tone...... :(

So I called Vonage - after rebooting everything several times, and 1 hour on the cell phone - my laptop battery died. I was then informed that I would need to get a computer up and running and to call back. OK - I didn't have my power adapter for the laptop, and my desktop PC is somewhere in a box since I haven't unpacked yet - my fault - no complaints....

The next day I called Vonage using my cell phone. Another bad thing - my cell phone coverage in this area is terrible. 1.5 hours on the phone and 4 techs later - I am still nowhere. Well I was told the router was talking to the Vonage network, but I still have no joy on my end. The long hold times killed my and my cell phone. I either dropped a lot of calls today, or the Vonage system hung up on me more than once - I blame my cell phone service.

So I pack up the router and run off to work this afternoon. There I plug in to the T1 line bypassing the firewalls entirely and call Vonage from my desk phone. After 30 minutes of holds I finally get a technician that tells me I have a bad router. They are sending me one through DHL overnight. Of course it is way passed being able to ship it out today, so I guess I'll get it Monday sometime.

Hopefully this will all work out - seeing as I've had an active account since May 26 - but no phone to use. Thank goodness I get the first month free - I would hate to be paying for something I can't even use....

So - Has anyone had similar experiences with the Linksys RT31P2-VD router? Does this get better? I would hate to think I need a land line so that I can trouble shoot the Voip system - it would kind of defeat the purpose.

Paul
