This is my experience with Vonage (so far)...

Started a couple of weeks ago w/the purchase of the Motorola VT1005. I connected it and signed up for the Vonage service and within minutes I was making (and recieving) calls all over the country! My high speed internet was the same as always and life was good! Unfortunetly the "good" part was short lived and my troubles began. First problem was that I discovered that my DirectTV "Tivo" unit could no longer dial out and I found this very troubling because I have already had my "landline" service stopped. Second problem is that it seems like my Internet connectivity is hit and miss all the time and pages that used to load instantly now take forever to load and sometimes don't load at all. Problem #3 is sometimes I have a dail tone and sometimes I don't and I quickly discover that the cure for this is to reset the Motorola unit aty least 6 or more times throughout the day

The above situation continued for a little over a week, then suddenly I was un-able to get a dial tone (internet worked on and off still however). I finally got fed up and decided to return the Motorola unit and cancel my Vonage service. The salesperson at the store told me that if I cancelled my service I was going to get hit w/ a $40 "termination fee" from Vonage. I decided not to return the Moto unit but instead exchange it for the Linksys WRTP54G wireless router unit. The salesperson informed me that the Moto was a piece of crap and the Linksys was an "upgrade". I get home and install the Linksys unit (carefully following the directions) and called Vonage (from my cell phone) and informed them about the new MAC address etc.. pick up the phone and YES theirs a dial-tone (a sound that I had not heard for days)!! I went to my PC to see if I had Internet access and I DIDN'T  I double checked the install, re-installed and reset everything 5 times and still no Internet and also no more phone now, all I have now is the really cool lokking blue lights on the Linksys unit to look at. BTW I did confirm several times that my Internet service was working and I am running a freshly installed copy of WinXP pro SP2 and I use Adelphia Internet w/an RCA model DCM425 cable modem. I called Vonage tech support and to make a long story short they figured I might have a defective router. I take back the Linksys unit and exchange it for another identical model. I again install the unit (carefully following the provided instructions) and call Vonage and inform them that I have another MAC adress. The guy at Vonage also tells me that at this point he doubts that I'll get the $100 mail in rebate (I doubt that I'll get it also) but thats gonna be a whole seperate story... I just want phone and Internet for the time being. I pick up the phone and theirs a dial-tone but when I go to my PC still no Internet. I decide to call Vonage tech support and while the phone is ringing I am quietly praying to myself that the the person on the other end doesn't have such a thick Indian accent that I can't understand him like the last time. I get to tier1 support and we go through the scripted routine of unplug this and unplug that for about a half hour, he even got creative and had me make sure that the rourter was getting AC directly from the wall and then he made me move it at least 5feet away from the cable modem  He reluctantly passed me off to tier2 as I still couldn't connect to the internet. The tier2 guy was very knowledgeable and we went through a whole bunch of stuff for almost 2hours straight (I consider myself to be very good at stuff concerning the PC and am very familiar w/the XP user interface). Again to make a long story short he got it working, and it took almost 2hours of troubleshooting to accomplish. I am not sure of what ended up fixing the problem (we did soooo many things) but I suspect that it might have been a firmware update. The tech claimed that their was no updates but I noticed the # had changed from .20 to .53 at some point during the phone call.

Well that takes us up to today and so far everything is working as it should, I even got my Tivo to dial out by making it use a NewYork area code and some other tricks I learned.

Is my story unique or have others gone through this much grief to get their units working properly?
