This is kind of getting off-topic a bit, but it started as a potential problem with the Linksys/Cisco Voip device and I am not convinced that's not a factor yet.

My D-Link wireless router has an option to "deny", which I tried for port 113. That just made it impossible to connect to my email server. I did not try filtering packets on that port, but read on.

I left out one important detail about my setup in my previous post. The machines I am having trouble with are configured to access the email server via its external IP address rather than via the internal (LAN) address. Dumb as that may sound, they are laptop computers that I also use on the road to get my email. I have them setup to do email externally so I don't have to keep changing the settings.

In the same timeframe as getting the Linksys/Cisco Voip appliance I also upgraded the firmware in the D-link router. So I suppose it's possible there is some new "feature" that is causing this failure. One of the new firmware features is dynamic DNS, which I was using in the email settings on one of the laptops. I don't suspect this because the IMAP problem seems to occur whether I use the dynamically assigned domain name or just the plain IP address. But there could be other changes to the firmware that are at play here.

Is it possible the email server is having trouble with IDENT because the client machine is connecting it to on an external IP address but "lives" on the same LAN and the router is now dealing with that differently than it did before? Note that for external access, only the secure IMAP port is mapped in the router. Also, I use a nonstandard port for SMTP on the router and map that to the standard port 25 on the email server.

I don't know much about packet switching and all that stuff, no more than I need to know to configure and maintain (and protect) a simple home network. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I still think the Voip device has something to do with this, but I don't know enough about how it works to determine what.
