This is just my opinion, based on everything I see posted here over a period of time, so take it for what its worth, although I am a computer/network professional with over 25 years in the field.

I haven't ever tried using one of the Vonage routers as a primary router, I only use them as phone adapters, behind a primary router with a good reputation for performance and functionality. With the Vonage routers, you're completely at Vonage's mercy, as they control the firmware, you can't touch it yourself. You can find LOTS of threads here, complaining about poor router performance of one kind or another, for the Vonage combo routers, no matter which model of router it is. (Yes, I know *some* people seem to have no issues with them, but *many* issues are raised here, on an ongoing basis.) Vonage is primarily concerned with the performance of the box as a Voip telephone adapter, not as a router. I don't think there's likely any priority at Vonage with regards to how well the thing performs as a router, vs. as a Voip adapter. Firmware releases are done to fix telephone bugs and improve Voip performance, not to enhance router performance.

So, again, for what its worth - MY recommendation is to get a GOOD router, and put the Vonage box behind it, just as a Vonage adapter. This is exactly what I've done with my Linksys/Vonage RT31P2, which sits behind my WRT54G router. You need 2 key things with your main router. First, good, solid, reliable, high performance as a router. Second, capable QoS functionality to make sure you can set the QoS for the Vonage adapter to assure good phone performance.

My recommendation on both counts - get a Linksys WRT54G - v4 or earlier - avoid the v5. This router is mature, has gone through many releases of firmware, both Linksys and 3rd party, and is known for high performance as well as good QoS capability. And, you should be able to find one for $50 or less, after rebates. Set it up as your primary router, plug the Vonage router in behind it, set the QoS parameters and you should have great internet performance and reliable phone service too. That's my setup on my 6M Comcast connection, and I've recommended and helped set up several friends the same way - it works great.
