Vonage There is a very easy to explain reason why the VTA-CV is behind the Dlink DIR625

There is a very easy to explain reason why the VTA-CV is behind the Dlink DIR625 router - the VTA has only one ethernet port.

I *might* have fixed it after talking to somebody from Dlink. Apparently the VTA-CV is so new that their tech link doesn't have any writeups about it so we were flying blind a little at first. Also Future Shop has nothing in stock other then the VTA-CV when it comes to Vonage so be prepared to see a lot of new people having these. Anyways, I was told to access the ip of the phone adapter, change it from dynamic IP to static and then made it 192.168.0.91 so it would be out of the router's DHCP range. I also had to remove the IP that was origanally reserved for the VTA by the router. The two other steps I did was to put this new ip as priority 1 in the QOS and also updated the ip in the DMZ. Now I am really not sure if those last 2 steps made a difference but my test was downloading things on my PC, demos on my Xbox 360, WoW running and ended up being on the phone for an hour without breaking up. I still need to make more calls but this was a good turn of events seeing how I would break up when not using any bandwidth.

I can't say that the tech support at Vonage was horrible, but I wished I was told about accessing the VTA thru a browser and giving it a proper IP as I had no clue that could even be done. The instructions just mention to plug the VTA with an ethernet cable from the router, where the AC power goes and the 2 phone plugs to put your phones in. As well it mentioned what the leds/blinks mean. There was a second book explaining all the wonderfull things that Vonage can do. While the first tier of tech support wern't rude or anything, they really are not helpfull at all. They basically just called tier 2 and kept checking if I was still there and apologized for the wait. Wished that was set up better. The tier2 person I talked to was fairly knowledgeable in general but his recommendation was to call my ISP to get them to tell me if my modem has docsis 1.1/2 in it, I told him I'm fairly sure that the RCA DCM325 was 1.1 but to make sure. This was yesterday. Back almost a week ago when I first got the VTA and activated it the tier 2 person I eventually got just changed the phone port from 1 to 2. That was useless. Both people wanted me to put the VTA in front of the router as well. I would of if it was possible. Heck, I tried to get a different TA that would let you do that but there are NONE availble at Future Shop or Best Buy. I know I could of ordered one from Vonage.ca but in all honesty I was not wanting to mail order from something that I was seriously considering cancelling if this could not be fixed in a very short time.

I realize that with Vonage or any other Voip service that you have to treat it like any other internet problem and I wished the tech support was a little more up to speed.

But yes I will have to test my phone some more and if it keeps working alright I will be happy and not cancel. As negative as I ranted, this is a happy post!
