There are two main reasons for needing to clone a MAC.
The first one is the one I mentioned about long lease times for dynamic IPs, and the most obvious one is ISP-level restrictions. If you go over most ISPs terms of service they do not allow multiplexing of a single public IP into several private ones by natting, with a proxy server or however you want to do it. This is usually enforced by registering the MAC of the first device the modem is plugged into (usually PC's NIC). The modem will refuse to hand out an IP to any other MAC after that one, either till lease time is up or until you call your ISP and register the MAC (or clone it :p).
Ben, I'm thinking that you had already done this and you don't remember, and in the process of restoring factory defaults or a faulty firmware push it got resetted. That's why it still worked hooked up directly into the PC, that MAC was already registered.
Steve, Brighthouse may not be filtering in your particular area. These restrictions are becoming more common tho. A few months ago Comcast didn't requiere you to clone your MAC, but since the Adelphia takeover MAC registration is more and more common.
So, all in all, there's three reasons why you may or may not need to clone your MAC: location, ISP, modem.
With DSL short lease times this is not usally a problem. The only time I had to clone a MAC was with a bridged Westell modem with Verizon DSL. Also, most DSL providers nowadays have smart modems which can dial out (as oppossed to dumb modems which cannot be NAT'd) si it's the modem that gets the public IP, not the router.
