Vonage There are several ways you could arrange your devices, but let me suggest the easiest.

There are several ways you could arrange your devices, but let me suggest the easiest. If you can get that working, it will be proof that your adapter and Vonage account are working. Then if you want to do something a little more complicated, we can help with that too.

Here's my simple approach.

1. Do not connect the electrical power cord to the RT31P2. Leave it disconnected from power until later.

2. Leave all your other system devices set up exactly as they were before you got the Vonage adapter/router. If you have changed it already, put it back and test your ability to get to the Internet from any computers or laptops on that system. After all that works as before, go to step 3.

3. Connect an ethernet cable from the lone Internet port on the RT31P2 into one of the open ethernet ports on your existing wireless router. Use the best quality cable you have with maximum shielding or the one that came with the RT31P2.

4. Place the RT31P2 as far away from your router as possible. Do not plug in the phone at this point.

5. Connect the power source from the new RT31P2 into a power socket or power strip - and WAIT at least 5 minutes before doing anything else with the RT31P2 or your phone. When you first power on the unit, it will probably attempt to update its firmware, and you'll see blinking green lights. If you interrupt it at this point, you could damage the RT31P2 - so be patient and let it sit undisturbed for at least 5 minutes after powering it on. If you see blinking green lights after 5 minutes, give it more time until the lights are sold.

(If possible, plug the RT31P2's power cable into a power source not used by your other devices. Be careful that power cords and cables from all of your devices be kept as separate as possible. If any must cross each other, be sure they cross at a 90 degree angle and are not parallel. Do not wrap cords and cables together with a twister seal or whatever. That might look nice, but it can and probably will cause lots of cross-over interference. )

6. Plug an RJ11 phone cable from your telephone into port #1 on the back of the RT31P2. (Be sure it's port #1. ) (If the phone requires a power cord, plug that into a power source.) Try to make sure that phone cable does not cross any other cables and is not draped across your other devices. If it must cross any cables or wires, keep that at 90 degrees.

7. Check for dialtone on the phone.

That should do it. Under this simple arrangement, you don't need to change any settings or forward ports or anything else.

You can use the ethernet ports on the RT31P2 for other computers and devices, but they will not be on the same local network as those plugged into your wireless router. It is easiest to just not use the ethernet ports on the Vonage adapter unless you are short of open ports on your wireless router.

Let us know how this works.
