Since you say that you don't have internet service with the VT2142 plugged into the system, I assume you tried this with it left out, which is fine. Check and make sure that you have the latest version of Java installed on your computer. If it still doesn't work, then try an alternate test at www.testyourvoip.com (test call to Boston).
Now, on to the connectivity issue. The proper cabling is from the modem to the WAN (internet) port on the VT2142, and from the LAN port on the VT to the ethernet port on your computer. If that's the way it's cabled, are you able to log onto the VT2142 admin page at http://192.168.15.1 ? If not, check out the network configuration of your computer and tell us what you see there. We particularly need to know whether you're using static or dynamic (DHCP) IP addressing.
Now this part you're not going to want to hear, but very few people get good Voip results with satelliite systems. The delays are just too great. However, you've already got the equipment, so let's see what we can do.
