The way Voip works is that a SIP client, in this case the Cisco IP phone must register with a proxy server of the Voip provider, in this case being Vonage.
To register with a Vonage proxy server, the SIP client must have a proxy server hostname / address, a username(the 11 digit phone number), and the SIP password. All of which can be obtained with the exception of the SIP password. The SIP password is unique for each phone number and is only provided to the customer on a softphone line as that is needed to log into the Vonage softphone client.
On a standard Vonage line(unlimited $24.99 or Basic $17.99) which comes part of a device which Vonage ships, these credentials are automatically provisioned to the device by Vonage and are not available to the customer. So using 3rd party Voip clients cannot be used unless you are purchasing the additional softphone line.
In your case, you could not replace a Vonage device such as the V-Portal since it would not have any provisioning for Vonage and Vonage does not provision 3rd party hardware to their network nor offer any support for it. This is why the only method of using 3rd party hardware of software is with the additional softphone line where the SIP password is provided to you but you would still be responsible for setting it up and could not contact Vonage for any support on it.
If you want to use your own SIP client on an Unlimited type of rate plan, you would need to subscribe to a Voip provider that allows BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) which Vonage does not.
And one last thing, the phones you have been mentioning on the other post, Aastra 9417CW and 9120 are not IP SIP phones. They are normal analog phones that would connect to the FXS ports on the Vonage telephone adapter (V-Portal / VDV21).
