The vt2442 by default prioritizes Voip traffic over all other traffic. If this is the only router you have, attached directly to your cable modem, it should work fine. However, as mentioned above, heavy downloads can quickly saturate your bandwidth limit (which bittorrent is famous for), and there's not much you can do about that. I don't think a new router will help in this case, but you can try.
I don't believe there is any way to make the vt2442 more agressive with regards to prioritizing traffic. It either does, or it doesn't. Any of the QoS settings in the vt2442 interface won't affect the built in phone adapter. Those QoS settings are to configure QoS for other devices I believe.
However, if you have the vt2442 behind another router, then you will need to setup QoS on that router to prioritize all traffic coming from the vt2442. I tried both setups with my wrt54gs, and eventually placed the vt2442 up front and everything else behind it, and left all settings at their defaults, and I believe this works best, for me anyway.
